When water comes everything
changes’’. Clean water saves lives,
but also changes them. Girls return
to schools, women begin small
businesses; the cycle of poverty is
broken, live change.
A WHO Cost-Benefit Analysis
showed that every US$1 invested in
improved drinking water and
sanitation services can yield
economic benefits of US$4 to US$34
depending on the region (WHO)
(WHO/UNICEF, 2005: 4).
Water Initiatives Nigeria (WIN) is a non-governmental, non profit organization. As a registered non
profit organization in Nigeria, WIN works to provide access to safe drinking water and proper
sanitation, and to assist in providing sustainable solutions to water problems in Nigeria. Millions of
people still lack access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation in our cities and rural
communities. Through different activities i.e. direct water projects, awareness campaign, advocacy,
training and capacity building and research WIN is able to provide a simple, effective and affordable
solutions to water and sanitation problems to people in urban and rural communities in Nigeria.

WIN also provide essential water and sanitation, and environmental education to local communities.
By educating people in clean water and good sanitation and hygiene practices, through these, we are
able to give the people, the resources and capacity not only for safe drinking water, but also they can
take proactive steps to prevent the spread of water borne and sanitation related diseases which give
them control over their own health.

Water Initiatives Nigeria believes the lack of access to safe water is the root cause of disease,
hunger and poverty in the developing world today. Right now, countless communities in our country
are suffering because local water supplies are scarce, contaminated, or non-existent. Our program
is designed to provide safe water supplies in urban and rural villages to enable the urban and rural
poor to help themselves; our dream is to see that all urban and rural communities in Nigeria have
access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation and to achieve a national water security. But we
know we can not do it all alone, WIN hope to cooperate with other NGOs, CBOs, governmental and
public agencies private organizations and international agencies to achieve these goals and
objectives in line with the millennium development goals.
